Best Products for Curly Toddler Hair
One of the questions I get the most from other moms is all about the hair products that work well for curly toddler hair! Trust me, it's not easy and all products are not made equal.
Arya's curls have changed every single month since birth, and so my approach toward styling her hair has adapted at the same pace. When she was very young I tried to keep our product use all natural and relied upon a million jars of coconut oil.
But now that she's a full-fledged toddler and her hair is much longer, greasy oil just doesn't work as well. I've also learned especially that mixed curly hair needs the right kind of moisture, a break on shampoo, and the right tools to really make it manageable. I've tried just about everything but here's a step by step look at some of the best products I recommend for taming your curly-haired toddler's mane!
Step 1: Shea Butter & Coconut Oil Hair Mask |
I typically only wash Arya's hair with shampoo 1-2 times week. Every other night we co-wash with an awesome new coconut oil based hair mask from Trader Joe's. What's co-washing? Nothing tricky -- it's just short for conditioner only washing. Shampoo can strip healthy oils from toddler hair! After her bath I add a healthy amount of virgin coconut oil, coil some of her curls using just my fingers and let her air dry. It's been the best answer for combatting dry tendrils and ensuring her hair stays smooth, soft, and easy to manage.
In the mornings I hit her curls with a healthy spritz of water and a quarter size dollop of coconut oil. Instead of running through with my fingers, I use a detangling brush to get through any of the tight knots that may have formed overnight. This gives her mane a little shine and brings her curls back to life!
Step 3: Mielle Organics Styling Gel | Smoothing Boar Brush
Getting Arya's hair done in the mornings is EXHAUSTING, but once it's done I need it to last all day. I was on the hunt for a styling gel that was natural, affordable, curl defining and non-sticky. Mielle delivers! It's made with more than 70% certified organic ingredients for a product that you can feel good about, and the honey/ginger scent is yummy. I add a quarter size of product at a time as I style, and smooth with a boar brush (paying special attention to her delicate baby hairs so they don't pull). Mielle is not at all greasy or stiff, so you can add more product as needed without build up!
