Baby Update: Month 4

The feels are SO real, as I write down my thoughts for a 4 month Bloggerella Baby update! This is probably the first time in the few short months of Arya's life that I actually feel the postpartum fog lifting, and that in itself is something to be emotional about. When I look back on everything that has happened (and really changed) recently, I'm a little in disbelief that I've made it through so far almost unscathed. There were more than a few rough days, where I precariously teetered between being helpless / sleep deprived to being drunk in baby love. I re-read my Birth Story just before sitting down to write this though, and it made me completely grateful for every single "tough" thing that we've experienced. Because although there have been so many "downs" while trying to figure out how to be a mom, I know how blessed we are to even get to enjoy any of the "ups". In the 4 months that Arya has been alive, I have learned:

  • It is completely okay to be on the verge of tears and laughter, at the same time, all the time
  • If you make eye contact with a half-sleeping baby, you've now got yourself a not sleeping baby
  • Poop is supposed to be yellow, and/or green, and/or a myriad of variations between the two
  • Anything (and I mean ANYTHING) can be done one-handed by a mom holding a baby
  • When in doubt, trust your gut because she knows what she's talking about
  • Breastfeeding in public feel like an Olympic sport, and we all deserve gold medals
  • Never, ever look sideways at a parent w/ screaming children in public ever again. Don't even give them a sympathetic smile. The kindest thing you can do is to carry on like their isn't a small human losing their shit in the middle of a Target
  • Babies are nowhere near as fragile as they seem
  • Tiny fingernails that are paper-thin, somehow manage to feel like sharp knives on your skin
  • Baby may be well-fed around the clock, but for you breakfast is at 3pm, lunch is at 6pm, and dinner is just not a thing. It's just not
  • The phrase "what did you do all day" evokes anger, and trying to even come up with an answer takes too much energy. Energy you don't have because of what you were "doing" all day
  • Chunky baby fat rolls are heaven, and you'll want to spend the greater part of an hour kissing them
  • You will spend a half hour getting baby down to sleep, only to miss them once they close their eyes, only to groan when they wake up too early. Mommyhood is a confusing place
  • You will want to wear jeans, but yoga pants are a great excuse to use your legs as a paper towel. Thank god they are black
  • You will get dressed every day by asking "Can I nurse in this?"
  • Staring at your baby for hours on end is not, can not, and never will be boring

I simply cannot wait to keep learning. <3
